Looking after someone? Know your rights!

Carers’ Rights Day is a national event held every year to ensure that carers know their rights regarding benefit entitlements and learn about the practical support available to help them in their caring role. To mark this special event, Derbyshire Carers’ Association are inviting carers and those working in Health and Social Care across the city to take part in a learning and development day. This ‘drop-in’ event will give participants the opportunity to find out how legal changes to the Care Act (commencing April 2015) may affect their rights as carers.
It is estimated that millions of carers do not claim benefits and the support to which they are entitled. This event, themed Looking after someone? Know your rights!, has been designed to equip them with sufficient knowledge, information and resources to aid their everyday life as a carer. Whether you are a carer or whether you work in a health and social care setting, we hope that this occasion will prove equally useful.
There are some pieces of legislation which can be beneficial for all carers to know. These are:
Your right to an assessment
Your right to request flexible working
Your right to not be discriminated against
A marketplace of relevant organisations for carers’ to visit will be provided during the day and local dignitaries will also be in attendance.
Refreshments will also be available as well as the opportunity to chat with other carers.
