Moving on from Caring - A Programme for Carers and Parents

What is the programme? This flexible programme will support you to learn new skills, gain qualifications and get valuable experience that will help you to take the next step in work and life. It’s been developed with carers and parents in mind, ensuring you can learn at times and locations that suit you.

The programme is available across Derbyshire, Derby city, Nottinghamshire and Nottingham city. It is being managed by local councils’ adult education departments in partnership with Education & Skills Funding Agency and Inspire.

Who is this programme for? If you are a carer (caring for a child, friend or relative), you are eligible for the programme.

What qualifications will I get and what will I learn? You will work with your personal mentor to plan a programme that works for you. You will work towards an employability qualification, choosing units that you would like to learn about.

Choose from:
•Functional Skills Maths, English or ICT
•Employability Skills Level 2
•Work Experience
•First Aid at Work Level 3
•Highfields Food Safety Level 2

How and when will I learn? The programme is designed to fit around you. You will be able to learn from the convenience of your own home, through your computer. If you don’t have a computer, don’t worry – you can borrow a laptop. You can also attend optional group learning, that will help you take your learning to the next level.

How long will it last? The programme will usually last anywhere between 3 and 6 months.

What support will I get? There is a bursary fund available to support your caring responsibilities. You can also borrow a laptop if you don’t currently have access to one. You’ll get ongoing support from your mentor.

If you have a certain career path in mind, your tutor will find a work placement for you. This could be a long-term placement or a short-term taster, working with local employers to provide you with this opportunity.

What can I do after the course? On completion of the course you will have a thirst for learning. There are strong links with local adult education providers who provide, for example:
•Diploma in Health and Social Care
•Diploma in Childcare and Early Years Care
•Diploma in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools
•Diploma to become a qualified teacher
•Access to University courses
