Eyes down as carers flock to bingo treat

More than 50 carers enjoyed bingo and lunch at Mecca, Chesterfield on Wednesday afternoon.

The event echoed to laughter as carers enjoyed a little time out to meet others with wins by lucky players.

Hosts, Mecca Bingo continue to support and raise vital funds for carers and the Carers Trust.

The day formed part of Derbyshire Carers Associations line up of events for Carers Week. Carers Week traditionally aims to raise the profile of carers throughout the UK, making sure carers can access advice, information and suitable support. In Derbyshire alone there are over 130,000 carers; around 10 percent of the county.

Carers Week highlights the vital contribution made by Carers to their families and communities in providing unpaid care for someone who is ill, frail or disabled.

By providing unpaid care for someone they know who is ill, frail or disabled, Carers save the economy an incredible £119 billion per year – that’s the same cost as running the NHS. Despite this – and the fact that 3 in 5 people will be Carers at some point – Carers often face a lack of recognition in all areas of their lives.

After the event one carer said “What a great afternoon out at the bingo! It is great to be amongst other carer friends and such a lovely buffet – we really were spoiled. You did it again DCA, thank you.”

Derbyshire Carers Association and partners were among the services and centres hosting more than 12,000 events and activities UK-wide during Carers Week to raise awareness of the support available to carers.
