New Forum for carers and people with learning disability – The Independent Living Action Group

In August the first meeting of a tentative new forum met in Long Eaton.

Back in the spring a carer approached me with an idea for a group that would promote good ways of supporting independent living, encourage best practice and monitor service systems already in place.

This new group’s inaugural meeting was attended by a dozen people which included people with learning disability’s, family carers and voluntary sector organisations.

Our intention is that the group will have a practical focus and that problems that crop us with regard to developing or maintaining independent living for people who have learning disability can be identified at grass-roots and solutions proposed.

In this way members of the group can achieve a sense of “ownership” and effective involvement in problem solving and development of independence.

It was agreed that we would meet again and extend an invitation to carers and people with learning difficulties who have an interest in the issues we are concerned with.

The next meeting is on Wednesday October 3rd from 11.00 am – 12.30 pm at the Happyivale club at Tamworth Rd., Long Eaton, post code NG103JS.
